The artwork
The Circus (1889-1890) by Georges Seurat is one of the masterpieces of the artist's pointillist phase, depicting a Parisian circus scene with geometric precision and a vibrant use of colour. The work shows acrobats, clowns and animals in motion, with the audience arranged around the edge of the ring. Seurat uses the pointillist technique, building the image from small dots of pure colour which, combined by the viewer's eye, produce luminosity, depth and a sense of dynamic energy. The composition is carefully studied: curves and diagonals guide the eye through the scene, while the contrast of complementary colours heightens the liveliness of the show.
The Circus is not only a depiction of popular entertainment but also an experiment in visual perception and colour theory, confirming Seurat as an innovator of modern art and an interpreter of late 19th-century urban life.
