The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century painting of the church of San Giovanni dei Battuti in Murano, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The view is from this side of the lagoon, with a figure observing the church, located on the other side of the island of Murano. The church has a fine façade, but Canaletto depicts it in the shadow, with the setting sun. Beyond the church, other buildings and bell towers in villages near the island of Murano can be seen, but their outlines are blurred. The sky features a few white and pink clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is exhibited at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Another version of this work by Canaletto exists.
