The artwork
Le Chahut, painted by Georges Seurat in 1889-1890, is an emblematic example of pointillism, a technique characterised by applying small dots of pure colour to build the image. The painting depicts a Parisian cabaret scene, with dancers performing the famous can-can, men seated in the audience and musicians in the background. Seurat uses strictly vertical and horizontal lines to organise the space, while the light and vibrant colours help convey the frenetic energy of the scene.
The work is not only a portrait of nightlife but also an experiment in colour theory and visual perception, showing how the combination of complementary dots can produce luminosity and movement. The geometric composition and the balance between figures and space make Le Chahut a masterpiece of pointillist Impressionism and an icon of bohemian Paris at the end of the 19th century.
