The artwork
The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) is a oil on canvas painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1903. Although it is not an abstract work, it is considered one of the most important of his early period, foreshadowing the name of the artistic group he would later co-found.
The work depicts a rider wrapped in a blue cloak, galloping swiftly across a green and yellow meadow, with a confused mass of forms in the distance. The forms are simplified and blurred, suggesting movement and speed.
The painting still belongs to the pre-abstract period of Kandinsky and is strongly Symbolist. The colour blue is not used for realism, but for its deep spiritual meaning, as theorised by the artist himself. The rider is a transitional figure and a symbol of spiritual transcendence and renewal in art.
