Cat and Bird is an oil painting by the Swiss-German painter Paul Klee, made in 1928, when Klee was teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The composition of this work is dominated by the face of a cat. Its head, rendered in a style between abstraction and representation, fills the entire canvas. Its facial features are geometrically stylised; the clean lines and exaggerated forms create an otherworldly expression. The cat's eyes are particularly striking: large, asymmetrical and unsettlingly alert, they gaze forward with irresistible intensity.
In the space between the cat's eyes, a small colourful bird materialises, its form simplified yet still recognisable. Both bird and cat are enveloped in a warm, earthy palette, steeped in soft tones of yellow, red and blue, which lend an ethereal quality to the scene. Klee's intention with this canvas was to "make hidden visions visible". In his view, the visible had to recede and focus instead on thought, imagination and the "hunger of the mind".
