The artwork
Cat and Bird is an oil painting by the Swiss-German painter Paul Klee, created in 1928, while Klee was teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The composition of this work is dominated by the face of a cat. Its head, rendered in a style somewhere between abstraction and representation, fills the entire canvas. Its facial features are geometrically stylized; the sharp lines and exaggerated shapes create an otherworldly expression. The cat's eyes are particularly notable: large, asymmetrical, and uncannily alert, they gaze forward with compelling intensity.
In the space between the cat's eyes, a small, colorful bird materializes, its shape simplified yet still distinguishable. Both the bird and the cat are wrapped in a warm, earthy palette, imbued with muted yellows, reds, and blues, lending an ethereal quality to the scene. Klee's intention with this canvas was to "make hidden visions visible." He believed the visible should recede and instead focus on thought, imagination, and the "hunger of the mind."
