“Castle and Sun” is an iconic work by Paul Klee created in 1928, considered one of his most representative masterpieces. This oil painting on canvas is currently held at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland. The painting depicts a fantastical landscape dominated by a stylised castle composed of essential geometric shapes – mainly rectangles, squares and triangles – that overlap harmoniously. At the top right, a large, bright yellow sun lights up the scene, creating a visual contrast with the red background.
The work was created while Klee was teaching at the Bauhaus, a school of art and design famous for its innovative approach to architecture and art. This painting perfectly represents the fusion of abstract and figurative elements that characterises Klee’s unique style.
