The artwork
An original and luminous eighteenth-century depiction of a Carnival day in Venice, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there are the decorated and colorful boats, sailing the Grand Canal in celebration. The sun shines, reflecting on the water of the Grand Canal, painted in shades of light green and blue. On the left there is a palace with red and blue drapes hanging. The streets are crowded with people; all of Venice is celebrating. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds, but it's a beautiful day. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The painting is exhibited at The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham, UK.
