The painting Cardinal Melchior de Polignac Visiting St Peter's in Rome by Giovanni Paolo Pannini depicts the arrival of the French cardinal Melchior de Polignac, diplomat and academic, at St Peter's Basilica, the heart of Christendom and symbol of papal Rome.
Pannini carefully reconstructs the grandiose interior of the basilica: the imposing naves, the colossal columns and Michelangelo's dome form the backdrop to the episode. The presence of the cardinal, surrounded by attendants and onlookers, underlines the political and cultural relations between France and the Papal States, in an age marked by intense diplomatic exchange. The work is a record of 18th-century diplomatic life, in which religion and politics intertwined in the symbolic places of Roman power.
