Caracalla, Roman emperor from 198 to 217, is known for his military campaigns and for the Constitutio Antoniniana, which extended Roman citizenship to all free men in the empire. The son of Septimius Severus, he first reigned with his brother Geta, whom he then had murdered so as to rule alone. His reign was marked by acts of cruelty and by important military and administrative reforms. He was assassinated by the praetorian prefect Macrinus, bringing an end to the Severan dynasty.
