The artwork Carabinieri and Washerwomen by Giovanni Fattori was painted in 1880
This work by Giovanni Fattori, entitled Carabinieri and Washerwomen, depicts a moment of everyday rural life rendered with the formal concision typical of the Macchiaioli. The painting is built up through juxtaposed patches of clear colour that define volumes and spatial depth without resorting to traditional chiaroscuro. The dark figures of the carabinieri in the foreground act as solid vertical pillars balancing the horizontal sweep of the women bent at work along the stream, creating a chromatic and symbolic contrast between the authority of the State and the humility of ordinary labour. The natural light, captured in its immediate essence, unifies the whole scene and lends the Tuscan landscape the solemn, melancholy dignity that characterises Fattori's realist poetics.
