This work by Giovanni Fattori portrays two mounted Carabinieri advancing along a lonely track, set in a bare, sun-drenched landscape that reflects the artist’s Macchiaioli poetics. The composition stands out for the essential quality of its forms and its use of flat, rigorous areas of colour, where the soldiers’ dark uniforms create a sharp chromatic contrast with the warm, earthy tones of the ground and the clear blue of the sky. Through a concise yet powerfully expressive brushstroke, Fattori conveys a deep sense of solitude and everyday duty, turning a simple moment of watchfulness into a silent reflection on space and light.
