Mounted Carabinieri in the Maremma (1890) represents the peak of the maturity of Giovanni Fattori, in which the technique of the macchia merges with an almost metaphysical solitude. Rather than celebrating the heroism of the great Risorgimento battles, the painting captures two soldiers silently patrolling the vast Tuscan plain beneath an oppressive sky that flattens the horizon. The figures are built through concise colour contrasts between the arid tones of the earth and the dark silhouettes of the uniforms, making wild nature the true emotional protagonist of this dignified and melancholy slice of everyday life.
