This work by Giovanni Fattori, Mounted Carabinieri on Reconnaissance, painted between 1880 and 1885, is a mature example of the poetics of the Macchiaioli, characterised by the "macchia" technique. Fattori portrays two carabinieri on patrol along a dirt track in the Tuscan countryside. In the foreground, the solid, sculptural masses of the two horses and the soldiers, seen from behind, define the space and depth. In the background, the hilly landscape with dry-stone walls and sparse trees is rendered in broad brushstrokes of pure, contrasting colour, where light and the rural atmosphere dominate the scene. The work captures a moment of silent observation and duty, embodying the realism and anti-academicism of the Tuscan movement.
