The artwork
A rare 18th-century capriccio with a close-up of a stone lion in Padua, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The lion in the foreground, painted by Canaletto in fine detail, lies on a pedestal and seems to guard the entrance to the palazzo. On the right, two citizens are looking at the statue, which seems to be placed inside the entrance hall of a villa. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1756.
The artwork is on display at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany.
