The artwork
An original and luminous eighteenth-century depiction of an imaginary view of a tomb in the lagoon, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is a canopied tomb, containing a rectangular sarcophagus belonging to some ancient Venetian nobleman. The tomb is in a state of neglect, with shrubs growing on the roof of the funerary temple. A precarious bridge leads to the tomb, with the lagoon visible in the background, blending with a sunset sky and pale pink clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. It's exhibited at Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
