A rare 18th-century depiction of a capriccio with, in the foreground, the area near Porta Portello in Padua, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. Prominent on the right is an ancient, crumbling colonnade overgrown with shrubs, at whose base are scenes of everyday life. In the background some of Padua's characteristic monuments can be glimpsed, including the domes of the Santo and of Santa Giustina. The sky is clear but with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1750. There is another variant of this work by Canaletto.
