The artwork
A rare 18th-century depiction of a capriccio with a foreground near Porta Portello in Padua, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. On the right side there's an ancient, decaying colonnade with shrubs stands out, with scenes of everyday life at its base. In the background, there are some of Padua's characteristic monuments, including the domes of the Saint and Saint Giustina. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1750. There is another variant of this work created by Canaletto.
