The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century engraving of a capriccio of a monumental staircase, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The work is executed in pen and ink, gray watercolor, and freehand pencil. In the foreground is the staircase with its large ramp, leading to a building. We are on the sides of a large architectural complex, and a couple is depicted at the foot of the stairs. Halfway up the stairs, a person is observing the panorama, which appears to be that of Venice, with its lagoon and churches. A few clouds are visible on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1755.
