An original and rare 18th-century capriccio of a harbour area with palaces, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the canal, busy with boats. On the quayside, on the side opposite the viewer, stands a large rectangular three-storey palace, while straight ahead is a second, Greek-style palace standing above the three-arched bridge. On the right side of the painting we can see another detail of a large palace. The sky is clear, shaded in light blue and white.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated c. 1740. Two other variants of this work by Canaletto exist.
