An original and rare 18th-century capriccio of a port area with buildings, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the canal, bustling with boats. On the quay, opposite the viewer, stands a large, rectangular, three-story building. Opposite, a second Greek-style building rises above the three-arched bridge. On the right side of the painting, another detail of a large building can be seen. The sky is clear, tinged with pale blue and white.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740 approx. Two other variations of this work exist, created by Canaletto.
