The artwork
An original and luminous eighteenth-century representation of a capriccio, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is a tall column, watching over the entire area. It is a capital placed on the side of a road leading to a city. Near the capital there are people, with scenes of everyday life. Not far away there is a ruined archway, and further away there is a bell tower. In the background there is the river, crossed by bridges, and the city.
The sky is clear, cloudless, and the day is beautiful. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1754. There are three variations of this work.
