The artwork
A romantic and rare view of the Colosseum, with decaying columns in the foreground, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The Colosseum is seen further in the background, majestic with its semicircular shape. In the foreground, Bellotto stylishly depicts the colonnade of a disused building, with a particular focus on shrubs growing above the columns, a sign of neglect and the relentless decline of time. At the foot of the colonnade there are scenes of everyday life. The sky is clear with a few white clouds. The painting, oil on canvas, is dated 1743. Another version of this work exists.
