A romantic and rare view of the Colosseum, with decaying columns in the foreground, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The Colosseum is seen further back, majestic in its semicircular form. In the foreground, by contrast, Bellotto stylishly draws the colonnade of a disused palace, with a detail of shrubs growing on top of the columns, a sign of neglect and of the oblivion of inexorable time. At the foot of the colonnade are scenes of daily life. The sky is clear with a few white clouds. The picture, oil on canvas, is dated 1743. There is another version of this work.
