The artwork
The work depicts an ideal landscape in which monuments of Roman antiquity, such as the Pyramid of Cestius, broken columns, temples and arches, are recomposed in an imaginary setting that celebrates the greatness of the classical past. In the foreground appear figures of travellers, scholars and common folk, who enliven the scene and enrich its meaning: the landscape thus becomes a place of encounter and meditation on time and the transience of civilisations. The golden light, the colour contrasts and the harmony of the composition give the painting a poetic and solemn character.
This work bears witness to Pannini's skill in transforming ruins into eternal symbols of the historical memory and cultural identity of Rome.
