The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Cannaregio in Venice, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Grand Canal, bustling with boats of various sizes. The water is painted in shades of blue-green. Further back there is the three-arched bridge connecting the two banks. On the bank (fondamenta) to the right of the painting there are scenes of everyday life and laundry hanging out to dry. On the opposite side, the buildings are in the shade. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
