The artwork
The Channel at Gravelines, Evening by Georges Seurat (1890–1891) is a masterpiece of Pointillism, a technique the artist developed by studying the science of colour. The painting portrays the channel at Gravelines, in northern France, in the evening hours, with a calm, contemplative atmosphere. The moored boats and the reflections in the water catch the soft light of sunset, conveying a sense of stillness and harmony. The composition guides the eye towards the horizon, while the Pointillist technique, based on small separate touches of colour, creates a vibrant luminosity and an optical effect of colour mixing.
Seurat combines geometric rigour and poetic sensitivity, turning a simple townscape into a careful observation of light, colour and time. The work is now held at theArt Institute of Chicago, and is one of the finest examples of Post-Impressionist experimentation with light and atmosphere.
