The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century depiction of a scene of life on a Venetian canal, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. A notable feature of the painting is the canal with its boats, including some gondolas, in front of the bridge. Canaletto painted the water of the canal in shades of light blue-green. On the opposite bank are Venetian palazzi and the bell tower of the campiello. The sky is cloudy, with rain clouds threatening. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created several variants of this painting.
The artwork is on display at the The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
