The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century depiction of the church of Santa Maria Zobenigo, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The church rises majestically with its columns and dominates the small square in front, where scenes of everyday life unfold. A distinctive feature of the church is its statues, which almost seem to step out of their niches on the main façade. The bas-reliefs too have been finely painted by Canaletto. The morning sun lights up the courtyard, though there are a few white clouds in the sky. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Another variant of this work exists.
