This splendid work depicts a sepulchral chamber in keeping with the custom and ancient magnificence of the Roman emperors. The technique used by the artist in the original is etching on copper, with extensive burin retouching. The plate is included in his series "Prima Parte di Architettura e Prospettive".

Passionate about Roman, Greek and Egyptian architecture, Piranesi was the son of a stonemason and builder, and first studied drawing with his uncle, an engineer. His drawings and engravings show a sophisticated skill in manipulating perspective and architectural elements to dramatic effect. Piranesi's subjects included not only imaginary ancient buildings, but also menacing prisons and mysterious ruins. His works were so popular that the prints were sold to Grand Tour travellers even after his death. A piece with a touch of history and timeless art.
