Caligula, also known as Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, was the third Roman emperor, reigning from AD 37 to 41. Born at Antium on 31 August AD 12, he was the son of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder. His nickname, Caligula, came from the military boots (caligae) he wore as a child.
His brief reign is remembered for his extravagance, eccentricity and alleged madness. Caligula sought to transform the principate into an absolute monarchy of the Eastern kind, a concept alien to Roman tradition. He was assassinated at the age of 28 by members of the Praetorian Guard.
