The work
Caligula , also known as Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, was the third Roman emperor, reigning from 37 to 41 AD. Born in Anzio on 31 August 12 AD, he was the son of Germanicus and Agrippina Major. His nickname, Caligula , came from the military shoes (caligae) he wore as a child.
His brief reign is remembered for his extravagances, eccentricities and alleged madness. Caligula sought to transform the principality into an oriental-style absolute monarchy, a concept foreign to Roman tradition. He was murdered at the age of 28 by members of the Praetorian Guard.
