The map shows the twelve signs of the zodiac "revolving" around the earth. The signs are written in Romance script.
This map was based on the Ptolemaic geocentric theory: in addition to the Earth (placed at the centre) there are the orbits of the planets then known and of the Sun, revolving around the Earth.
Battista Agnese (c. 1500 – 1564) was an Italian cartographer.
He was of Genoese origin but worked in Venice, where he was commissioned by princes, merchants and high-ranking officials.
