The Night Café is an 1888 painting by Vincent van Gogh, set in Arles. The scene shows an interior lit by acid-yellow lamps, with a billiard table in the centre, solitary figures and distorted perspectives. The violent colours, the red of the walls and the green of the floor create a sense of unease and discomfort. Van Gogh stated that he wanted to express the terrible passions of humanity through colour.
The café thus becomes a psychological space, where light and shadow convey solitude, alienation and deep emotional tension, a nocturnal vision that turns a simple bar into a universal symbol of modern anguish and urban existential isolation.
