The artwork
"Bust of a Woman" by Kazimir Malevich, painted around 1928–1932, belongs to the artist's mature figurative period, following his Suprematist experiments. The work depicts a female figure at half length, characterised by a simplified volumetric construction and a strong stylisation of the features. The face, almost devoid of physiognomy, takes on the value of a universal symbol rather than a realistic portrait. Malevich uses an intense but essential colour range, with flat fields of colour that recall his pursuit of abstraction.
The neutral background and frontal composition give the figure a monumental, iconic presence. The artist thus explores the identity of the Soviet peasant woman, suspended between the depiction of everyday life and a strong metaphysical character. The painting bears witness to his attempt to reconcile his avant-garde vision with the demands of the realism imposed by the regime, without renouncing his own innovative poetics.
