The artwork
An original and luminous depiction of the Bucintoro's return to Venice on Ascension Day, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, we see the basin with all the boats, "dressed" for the occasion, surrounding the Bucintoro, which has the Venetian flag flying. The painting also depicts the Doge's Palace and the other buildings in Piazza San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canaletto also created other variations of this work.
