The artwork
An original and luminous depiction of the Bucintoro's return to Venice on the Ascension Day, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal. The foreground depicts the basin with all the boats surrounding the Bucintoro, which has the Venetian flag flying. A second small red boat carrying tourists is also prominent. The painting also depicts the Doge's Palace and the other buildings in Piazza San Marco, as well as the two columns of San Teodoro and San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1745 approximately. Another variation of this work was created by Canaletto.
