The artwork
"Broadway Boogie Woogie", painted by Piet Mondrian in 1942-1943, is one of his masterpieces of geometric abstraction and reflects the influence of New York city life and jazz. The work consists of a grid of vertical and horizontal lines dividing the canvas into small rectangles and squares coloured red, blue, yellow and white. Unlike his earlier, more static compositions, here Mondrian introduces a lively, pulsating rhythm reminiscent of the syncopated melodies of boogie-woogie, a musical genre he loved to listen to.
The alternation of colours and white spaces creates an effect of movement and vibration, like the ceaseless flow of the city and its night-time lights. This work represents the culmination of his search for balance between order and dynamism, geometry and urban life, showing how abstract art can convey energy and musicality without directly depicting objects or people.
