The artwork
Boy with an Arrow is an oil portrait on panel attributed to Giorgione, created around c. 1500‑1505 and held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The work depicts the bust of a young man against a dark background, his face emerging in soft light from delicate gradations of chiaroscuro. The boy wears a white shirt and a red garment, and holds an arrow, a symbolic detail that has prompted numerous critical interpretations: it might recall Eros or courtly love, or allude to Saint Sebastian through the attribute of martyrdom, or finally represent a mythical youth such as Paris, linked to the classical tradition.
The melancholy expression, the introspective gaze and the soft treatment of the face show the influence of Leonardo filtered through Venetian poetics, creating a figure suspended between psychological portrait and symbolism. The work is an example of Giorgione's interest in idealised portraits that blend feeling, mystery and human presence.
