The artwork
Boy in a Red Waistcoat is one of Paul Cézanne's most famous portraits, painted between 1888 and 1890. The work depicts a young man seated in an introspective pose, constructed through a careful balance of line, volume and colour. The intense red of the waistcoat dominates the composition and creates a strong contrast with the background and the more sober tones of the rest of the figure.
Cézanne abandons the traditional portrait to concentrate on formal structure, turning the subject into a solid, timeless presence. The painting conveys silence and psychological depth, and is considered fundamental to understanding the transition from Impressionism to modern art.
