The artwork

“Boulevard Montmartre, Winter Morning” by Camille Pissarro, painted in 1897, is an extraordinary example of his ability to capture urban life in an Impressionist manner. The painting shows a view of the famous Parisian boulevard, with streets wet with rain and the grey sky typical of a winter morning. The scene is enlivened by people walking beneath the bare trees and by the traffic of carts, highlighting the everyday life of Paris as winter wraps it in a soft mist.

The work is dominated by a cold, diffused light that manages to illuminate the architectural details of the building façades and the reflections on the wet streets. Pissarro’s quick, irregular brushstrokes evoke the frenetic movement of the city, with passers-by and vehicles appearing as patches of colour, giving the impression that the scene is constantly changing. The snow, partly covering the streets and trees, reinforces the sense of freshness of the winter atmosphere. In this painting Pissarro celebrates the liveliness and modernity of late 19th-century Paris, while also exploring the relationship between light, colour and the urban environment.
