The artwork
Bergère rentrant des moutons (Shepherdess Bringing in the Sheep) is a painting by Camille Pissarro made during his time in Éragny, at the end of the 19th century, a period when the artist devoted himself intensely to depicting French rural life. In this picture Pissarro portrays a young shepherdess leading her flock home, in a country landscape reflecting the quiet and simplicity of rural life. The work bears witness to Pissarro’s interest in the living conditions of peasants, seen not only as pictorial subjects but as symbols of a social reality being transformed by growing industrialisation.
This painting reflects the social and environmental themes of the time, brought out through Pissarro’s sensitive and progressive eye.
