The artwork

The Benson Madonna is an oil painting on panel unanimously attributed to Antonello da Messina and datable to around 1474-1477.

The Virgin is depicted half-length, with a gentle, meditative gaze turned towards the viewer, while the Child, held in her arms, shows naturalness and vitality. The dark, neutral background enhances the light that models the faces and garments, creating intense realism and a sense of serene solemnity.

The work is kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
