The artwork
A rare 18th-century engraving of the repairs to the bell tower of San Marco in 1745, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, using pen and ink with watercolor on paper. The large bell tower stands out, with its scaffolding and ropes to lift materials, while passersbys in the square observe the work. There is great excitement, and the work is progressing rapidly, with pulleys lifting the materials. On the right, the clock tower and other Venetian palaces are visible.
The engraving is undated. Two other variations of this work exist, created by Canaletto.
