A rare 18th-century engraving of the repair work on the bell tower of St Mark's in 1745, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, in pen and ink with wash on paper. The great bell tower stands out, with the scaffolding and ropes used to haul materials up, while in the square some passers-by are watching the work. There is great activity; the work is proceeding briskly, with pulleys lifting the materials. On the right the clock tower and the other Venetian palazzi are visible.
The engraving is undated. Canaletto created two other versions of this work.
