La Belle Ferronnière is a refined portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1490 and 1496, during his Milanese period at the court of Ludovico il Moro. The woman's identity is still uncertain: she may be Lucrezia Crivelli or Beatrice d'Este. The painting shows a female figure in three-quarter view, her gaze directed at the viewer, with an intense expression and composed elegance. The name derives from the jewel, a band with a small pearl, that adorns the lady's forehead. Leonardo uses his characteristic chiaroscuro to model the face softly and give it three-dimensionality and psychological depth.
The work reveals a perfect balance between grace and formal rigour, typical of Leonardo's artistic language. Now held at the Louvre Museum in Paris, La Belle Ferronnière it is considered one of the highest examples of Renaissance portraiture for its intensity and technical perfection.
