The artwork
La Belle Ferronnière is a refined portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1490 and 1496, during his time in Milan at the court of Ludovico il Moro. The woman's identity is still uncertain: it could be Lucrezia Crivelli or Beatrice d'Este. The painting depicts a female figure in three-quarter view, her gaze directed toward the viewer, an expression of intensity and composed elegance. The name derives from the jewel—a band with a small pearl—that adorns the lady's forehead. Leonardo uses his characteristic chiaroscuro to softly model the face and convey three-dimensionality and psychological depth.
The work reveals a perfect balance between grace and formal rigor, typical of Leonardo's style. Today housed at the Louvre in Paris, La Belle Ferronnière is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance portraiture for its intensity and technical perfection.
