"On the Beach" is a significant work by the Livorno-born painter Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908). This painting is part of the artist's extensive maritime oeuvre, which often depicted serene scenes of his homeland.
The composition is dominated by a sailboat moored on the beach. Next to it are three fishermen: two are relaxing peacefully near the boat, while the third stands on a cliff, a sack in his hand, intent on approaching the sea. Other boats can be glimpsed on the horizon.
