A rare and original painting depicting the 1770 Battle of Chesma Bay, painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The sea is filled with galleons lined up with sails unfurled. In the foreground, on the left, a galleon is burning, while the white spray of projectiles can be seen on the water. The ships are positioned offshore, but the battle is only just beginning and the outcome is still uncertain. Near the shore, the sea is slightly choppy.
The painting is on display at the Peterhof Palace, Petrodvorets, in St. Petersburg, Russia.
