A rare and splendid historical view of the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna by Gaspare Vanvitelli. The monument occupies a large portion of the painting. The dominant color is a light brown, expertly blended by Van Wittel. On the far right are three pilgrim observers, while on the left is a large tree that does not distract from the view of the Basilica. The painting was painted by Vanvitelli during his stay in Emilia Romagna.
The painting is part of the Devonshire Collections, Chatsworth.
