The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Basilica of Maxentius, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground on the left there are the ruins of the Basilica of Maxentius, abandoned to oblivion, with shrubs growing over the walls. All that remains of the Basilica is a colonnade of three arches, enclosed by a gate; tourists in Rome can only see this Basilica outside the fence. In addition to this Basilica, there is also a second church, on the right side of the painting. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The work is exhibited at the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
