An original and rare 18th-century view of the Basilica of Maxentius, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground on the left are the ruins of the Basilica of Maxentius, abandoned to oblivion, with shrubs growing on the walls. What remains of the Basilica is a colonnade of three arches, closed off by a gate; visitors to Rome can only view this Basilica from outside the enclosure. Besides this Basilica there is also a second church, on the right of the painting. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The work is on display at the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
