The artwork

This engraving depicts St Peter's Square in all its architectural magnificence, capturing the essence of the Vatican as it appeared in the past. The art of engraving, with its clean, precise line, lends depth and geometric rigour to the composition, highlighting the perfect balance between the grandeur of the basilica and the symbolic embrace of the colonnade. The perspective is central, with the obelisk acting as the focal point and visually dividing the square into two symmetrical halves. The fountains on either side complete the symmetry, helping to bring movement to the scene.

The work conveys a strong sense of order and harmony, elements that reflect the very idea of the temporal and spiritual power of the Catholic Church. The architectural layout, which appears orderly and almost monumental, underlines the contrast between the smallness of the human figures and the majesty of the buildings, evoking a sense of reverence towards the religious structure.
