The artwork

A composite watercolour that brings together two iconic elements of Rome: the majestic St Peter's Basilica and one of the angels of the Ponte Sant'Angelo. The work uses the wash technique to blend these two symbols harmoniously, creating a composition that seems to float in a celestial sky, accentuated by a light formation of birds in flight.

St Peter's Basilica dominates the left-hand side, with its imposing dome and architectural details precisely defined, yet with a shading that conveys softness. The warm, delicate colours of sunset merge with the blue sky, giving a sense of serenity and peace. The structure emerges from a gentle fade, as if it had been painted on a breath of wind.

On the right, the statue of the angel is rendered with an impressive level of detail, with particular attention to the texture of the stone. The angel holds a lance, and its solemn expression seems to watch over St Peter's and the whole city. The use of soft colours and the shadow of the statue create an evocative contrast with the luminous setting of the basilica in the background.
