The artwork
An aerial view of St Peter's Square and the surrounding city. The work, made with wash and watercolour technique, conveys a sense of breadth and monumentality, highlighting the perfect symmetry of the square, dominated by the central obelisk and Gian Lorenzo Bernini's colonnade.
The architectural details, though delicately defined, blend into the surrounding cityscape, which stretches towards the horizon. The city appears lively, with its sand-coloured buildings and green spaces emerging between the structures, and the River Tiber gently cutting through the landscape.
The soft colours, with touches of green, light blue and brown, give the image a feeling of calm, as if everything were suspended in the serene light of late afternoon. The human figures in the square are reduced to small marks, making the grandeur of the architecture all the more striking.
