The artwork
The Cardsharps by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is an oil painting on canvas executed in 1594, held in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The work depicts a scene of everyday life, showing a naive young man being swindled by two cardsharps during a game of cards.
The scene is set in a small, intimate space, with a table at the centre where the figures are absorbed in play. The cardsharps are shown in bright, multicoloured clothes, like those of court jesters, while the victim wears simpler, darker garments.
The naive young man is focused on his cards, unaware of the deception under way. One of the cardsharps leans in to peek at the victim’s cards, while his accomplice watches the scene, ready to give signals to rig the game.
