The artwork
Giovanni Fattori's painting "The Avenue of Trees with Two Children," painted in 1867, is a significant work of the Macchiaioli movement, of which Fattori was one of the leading exponents. During this period, Fattori had recently lost his first wife and was staying at Diego Martelli's estate.
The work depicts a tree-lined avenue, likely a Tuscan landscape, with two children strolling along it. The scene evokes a sense of tranquility and everyday life. Fattori was deeply attached to the depiction of rural life and the Tuscan landscape, often populated by simple, authentic figures, such as farmers or soldiers, another recurring theme in his work.
