The painting "The Tree-Lined Avenue with Two Children" by Giovanni Fattori, made in 1867, is a significant work of the Macchiaioli movement, of which Fattori was one of the leading exponents. At this time Fattori had recently lost his first wife and was a guest at Diego Martelli's estate.
The work shows a tree-lined avenue, probably a Tuscan landscape, with two children strolling along it. The scene evokes a sense of stillness and everyday life. Fattori was deeply attached to depicting rural life and the Tuscan landscape, often peopled by simple, authentic figures such as peasants or soldiers, another recurring theme in his output.
