The artwork
The Self-Portrait of 1933 is one of the most significant works of the final phase of Kazimir Malevich’s career. After years devoted to Suprematist abstraction, the artist temporarily returned to figuration, but without abandoning his philosophical and symbolic research. Malevich depicts himself in an austere pose, against a neutral background, wearing a black garment with essential lines that recall the geometric forms of his avant-garde. The face is stylised, almost severe, with a direct and self-aware gaze.
Scholars read his choice to return to portraiture at a time when the Soviet regime was imposing Socialist Realism as a subtle, critical response: not a surrender, but a way of reaffirming his own artistic identity. On the canvas his signature appears together with the famous black square, a symbol of the supremacy of the creative spirit. This self-portrait thus becomes a manifesto of his legacy and of his struggle for the freedom of art.
